WHY THIS COURSE?
The CTTS is more than a qualification - it is a mark of trust and technical excellence in the cremation profession. Cited in the Secretary of State’s Process Guidance Note for Crematoria and accredited by Pearson to BTEC standard, it sets the benchmark for UK crematorium technician training. Through self-paced study and mentor support, students complete practical and written assessments, including supervised cremations and multiple-choice tests, building confidence and competence in all aspects of cremator operation. CTTS equips technicians to perform safely, professionally, and to the highest standards, and provides a stepping stone to advanced qualifications, such as the ICCM Diploma’s Crematorium Management unit.

WHAT'S COVERED?
The CTTS can be taken as a standalone qualification to meet the Secretary of State’s Guidance Note PG5/2(25) for Crematoria or as preparation for the ICCM Diploma’s Crematorium Management unit. Accredited by Edexcel to BTEC standard, the course is reviewed annually to ensure consistent quality.
Students work through the course pack at their own pace with support from an on-site mentor—usually a lead technician, supervisor, or manager—who provides guidance, reviews assignments, and monitors progress toward independent competence.
Supervised Cremations
Students must complete supervised cremations. There is no fixed number; mentors decide when the student is ready for assessment.
Written Assessment
Students complete a workbook of written assignments, which is submitted to an ICCM officer for marking.
On-Site Assessment
In Scotland, technicians must also visit a crematorium with consistent recovery of ashes from baby and infant cremations, and assessments must observe at least two such cremations to meet national recommendations.
